I am compelled to write this blog for a few reasons and please let’s make it clear from the outset, I am absolutely no expert on original art, I am not an art curator but I am a lover of beautiful things and original art falls into the category and for the sake of the blog, art = original art.
So why the blog on art?
1- In the world of disposal items, grab a print and toss in a few years, art has a positive effect on the people who own it , it just makes life more interesting. Our home is not full of originals, there is a mix of prints and originals but every time some one comes to our home, it is the originals they are drawn to, the story that captivates the purchase, the reason why this one was brought into our home. Honestly art just enriches our lives, full stop…. disclaimers thank goodness the furniture and decor has been updated ..
2- When I design there has to be a focal point in the room. It could be a number of things that inspire me to create the focal point but nothing says wow more than an original piece of art.. Typically the furniture, carpets, wall colour etc are a nice blend of the same colour set and then there it is – the wow, yet a beautiful, interesting discussion piece, that true visual enjoyment in the room, it just enriches your life, trust me on this.
Also I never look at art as a decoration, it is so much more than that. My experience with many clients is they fuss too much over the decor and the matchy matchy look that HGTV loves to sell us. Don’t stress too much my friends, buy what inspires you, makes you smile and that warms your heart.
We purchased the above piece on a trip to Ottawa one spring several years ago. My wife (Bevie) and I were walking downtown and there it was, we both stopped and smiled. We went back the next day chatted with the owner of the gallery and got the deets on the piece. Bevie and I went for a coffee and we both said the same thing, doesn’t that piece make you smile, it is so beautiful with all its colour. When we brought it home we had just purchased a new home and in the throes of renovation so we created the colour palate around this piece. We haven’t changed the wall colour in 10 years, why.. cause it works with Our Joy of Life.
Super Important- don’t forget when you buy art you are enriching the life of the artist, they continue to nourish their creative side with our support and is this not why we are here, to nourish and support each other , rather than mass produce the world items more than what already exists, yuck where is the love in that Social media drives the need to have what others already have, step out of the box and have something no one else has, an original. Support a local artist, there are so many talented artists right here in the Fredericton area.
Which brings me to Wild Child !
I fell in love last week. 💜
I have followed Lindsey MacKay for over a year now and last week there it was her masterpiece …titled Wild Child.
Not only could I not stop laughing and smiling when I saw the piece, I contacted Lindsey right away, I had to see Wild Child up close and personal. I was worried that Wild Child might get scooped up at her debut at a Toronto art exhibition where Lindsey is scheduled to showcase her work. In chatting with Lindsey she informed me the name of the art show in Toronto is titled Wild in the City and she wanted to think outside the box of placing a wild animal in an urban setting. she tells me – “I was trying to think about situations in my life which were wild. Definitely having young children brought on some of those feelings, trying to run errands while taming temper tantrums. It’s our children and also everyone who can relate to this.”

So here is the fun part my reaction to the piece was very similar yet I was seeing it though the eyes of a child, my eyes to be exact. My poor Mom, the odd time when she had the chance to spend a few extra hard-earned dollars on me, I was a nightmare to deal with. If they didn’t have that pair of sneakers in my size, or the Levi jeans in my length , well to put it mildly I was horrible. So when I saw Wild Child, I saw myself at that age. I laughed so hard when I saw her on Instagram I could barely breathe, I suspect that is not what my mother was feeling during those moments… so hats off to all you parents, there is a special place in heaven for you and all your patience and support for us Wild Childs.
So Wild Child will have a place of distinction in our home and I will smile every time I look at her and I will honor my mother even more than I do now, thank you Mom and Lindsey thank you for bringing your creative world into my life and into our home.
So there is the story and a few thoughts from an interior designer to consider when looking and pondering over art.
Just go purchase some art, introduce it into your life, have fun with it, it will enrich your life and we need more enrichment these days.
