Creating “Big City Vibe” in Downtown Fredericton
The Challenge: Combining the existing historical elements with a modern sleek design
Our vision for this commercial space was a “big city feel”. Our goal was to create a loft style industrial design that one could easily find in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Loft style is a name for a modern urban style, characterized by open space and industrial elements including high ceilings, exposed raw brick walls, exposed beams and pipes.
Once we saw the gorgeous architecture in the space with the exposed brick and ceiling beams, we knew immediately we had to incorporate these elements into our design plan. The space required an open concept work environment with a dedicated boardroom and a kitchen, so we demolished all the dividing walls. There are various challenges with older buildings such as uneven floors, poor ventilation and electrical upgrades. Our goal was to ensure all these issues were addressed and yet at the same time, ensure the upgrades would emulate our industrial loft style design.
We chose a charcoal gray/white scheme with all the exposed pipes and new conduit sprayed black to accentuate the industrial appeal. The original exposed brick walls remained intact and the ceiling beams required additional care as they had been slightly damaged over the years.
The kitchen was created using a high gloss white and charcoal finish with stainless-steel accents and the boardroom was framed in black steel and glass to compliment the industrial style. We spent several days sourcing light fixtures to ensure they complimented the industrial loft style, and also ensuring the proper functionality for the client’s work environment. The flooring is a seamless transition from carpet tiles to luxury vinyl plank, stylish and functional with a backing that minimizes noise.
Our goal was to create a space where employees wanted to work, not where they had to work. This is now is a great space for staff to be inspired, which in turn, increases productivity, collaboration and fosters team spirt.
